Doodling Between the Headlines - The Times
Our Role: Creative, Production, Directing, Editing, Post-Production, Sound Design
Background
For Euro 2016, The Times had a dedicated magazine called ‘The Game’, featuring the news and coverage from the month long tournament.
Our Idea
Our project showcased the newspaper’s coverage of the games, producing a highlights film that launched straight after the final.
Inspired by how people doodle over newspapers, our idea was to illustrate directly onto the pages of The Times, so that as the pages were turned these ‘doodles’ would animate to tell the story of the tournament.
Each evening of the tournament a team of animators would create wireframe animations of what had happened that day so that we could join that action up to the next days coverage.
These frames were then individually traced onto the newspaper page by page.
Building the animation in this way - creating chapters as the tournament was progressing - enabled us to release the animated highlights reel whilst it was still being talked about. Along with the Staff Pick, Vimeo showcased the film on their homepage and the film was picked up by dozens of blogs and media outlets.
